In Tehran, two young women have been detained following the circulation of a video where they danced in celebration of the upcoming Persian New Year, as reported by Iranian media on Saturday.

The video, featuring the women dancing near Tajrish Square, a popular gathering spot in northern Tehran, gained traction on social media.

The arrest was ordered by the Tehran prosecutor, citing a violation of social norms through their dance, according to Tasnim news agency.

Dressed as Hadji Farouz, a red-clad folklore character associated with Nowruz, the Persian New Year, the women’s actions clashed with Islamic law in Iran, which prohibits mixed dancing and women being alone in public.
